What does it mean to ‘spark joy’?

At our Board meeting last week, we found ourselves asking a deceptively simple question: what does it really mean to ‘spark joy’ in a young person’s life — and what does that ask of us in practice?
Together, we explored two different ways of thinking about happiness, rooted in Ancient Greek philosophy:
Hedonia — the small, immediate feelings of pleasure
Eudaimonia — the deeper sense of meaning and purpose
Our work has largely been designed with ‘eudaimonia’ in mind. But we found ourselves asking: what is the interplay between those fleeting “glimmers” of joy and the deeper satisfaction that comes through dedication and achievement?
Can these small moments act as an accessible starting point — a gateway into passion, purpose, and progress?
Our CEO Andrea has pulled together our early reflections here.
